villareal vs real madrid

Another season, another game, same old Madrid.

Many Real Madrid fans around the world expected better result from Madrid this season. With the return of Zidane after the nightmares of last season which saw Madrid knocked out of the champions league by under- dogs Ajax after winning the first leg away from home, and finishing third in the league behind rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, many expected more.

Three games into the league, many have started to question the quality and ability of head coach Zidane. At the end of last season, he promised that they will be great change in the team. Three games gone and many still wonder when the change he promised would come.

The team still doesn’t look changed, with Zidane preferring to stick with the players that he used during his previous spells with the club. With exception to Cristiano Ronaldo and Navas who looks set to leave the club, Zidane is still yet to alter the line-ups.

Today’s match against Villarreal highlights that Madrid still has a lot to do in order to compete for any trophy this season. It took Villarreal less than ten (10) minutes to break the Madrid defence.  Despite all the efforts put to improve the defence, Real Madrid can’t just stop conceding goals.

Also, the midfield has failed drastically this season. It lacks creativity. Modric still hasn’t recover his form after the world cup. Toni Kross looks slower. Casemiro the only bright midfielder still looks confused sometimes in matches. Isco is the worst of them all. The Spaniard is too slow in circulating the ball and sometimes appears to be slowing down the pace of the game and attack. James is still not at his best. With Pogba looking set to stay at Manchester united, Zidane has a lot of work to do in order to bring the best of his players. Maybe, with the inclusion of sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes, they may be improvement in the midfield due to competition.

The attack is the only positive part in the team. Despite injuries to the likes of Hazard, Asensio and Brahim Diaz, the attacks looks fair. New signing Jovic is still yet to find his foot. Zidane seems to have lost faith in Vinicus Junior despite his performance last season before his injury against Ajax. Karim is in his best form despite not scoring against Villarreal. Bale is proving why he is a world class player with his performance so far this season.

So far, this present Madrid is not what many Real Madrid fans expected after all the money spent in signings this summer. Fans expect to see better from the coach and the players. Maybe with the introduction of Hazard and the signing of Bruno fernandes, better results will come from the team.
